I feel that the reason for the relatively shallow penetration step is that both Dave and Brandon are quite involved in teaching the technique at the time when they do it. Their aim is not to take the opponent down but rather to show the finer points of the technique, so they're taking it easy.

Great post! There is a lot of useful material in this tutorial, I will definitely have to watch it again and take some notes. It seems to end quite abruptly, is there a 6th part to it? No matter though, there is still plenty to take away.

One thing I did notice though, is that when Dave (and Brandon to a certain extent) is demonstrating high crotch, his penetration step is not nearly as deep as Saeed advocates. Perhaps this is just a subtle difference in styles, or is it that a shallow penetration step is faster, and a deep penetration step gives you better position? Maybe both are correct, depending on the situation...

Steph, glad to hear that you are interested in coming along to train with us. You are more then welcome to join any of the classes we run which are all mixed not only in gender but also in terms of skill level. We find that this helps to fast-track newcomers through the initial adaptation period and quickly gets them to the level where they feel confident within the class.
